ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses common frameworks in multinational, cross-cultural leadership and management task areas including: emerging worldwide concepts of leadership and management; tasks involved in leading a multinational enterprise; as well as the values and character traits, knowledge and skills, and behaviour styles of successful leaders. It also discusses Contingency frameworks and guidelines used by leaders and managers, and effective leadership and management behaviours. Strategic management involves both leadership and management. Leadership and management are related but distinct concepts. The chapter examines team management, a major leadership/management area in multinational businesses. In general, a team is a group of people with complementary skills, committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. Integration with cross-cultural teams is used in multinational corporations as one effective way to bridge cultural gaps, balance global efficiencies, respond to local differences, and transfer knowledge. This chapter explores a major integrative application area: leading and managing teams.
