ABSTRACT

The diversity of graduate students has increased as the graduate student population has become more multicultural. International students now represent a growing proportion of the graduate students in American universities. Universities can enhance the academic performance of graduate students by contributing to the quality of life of students through facilitating their sense of belonging and by providing appropriate support to students’ sense of worth. A dean of student affairs can offer direct help to graduate students as well as to various graduate and administrative departments. A student who withdraws in the middle of a program is a tangible loss to the university. Administrators need to be aware that students may be covered by health insurance but not have access to care because their home state health maintenance organization (HMO) or provider will not cover services in the university community.
