ABSTRACT

Many graduate schools are developing specific programs to support their students’ overall psychological well-being. In some universities, each separate school may have a dean for student affairs as well as a dean for academic affairs, and there may be university-wide offices that help students with more general issues such as housing, financial aid and career counseling. The transition into graduate school begins with the application process and the notification that the student has been accepted into a graduate program. Students have important concerns about living arrangements and it is helpful for universities to maintain a bureau to inform students about available housing. Universities need to be certain that all graduate students have health insurance as well as guaranteed access to health care. Married students may need information about job openings for spouses, child care facilities and the location and names of both public and private schools.
