ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the special needs of special populations. It deals with a discussion of general guidelines for work with special populations. This discussion includes consideration of the use of the ecosystem model for assessing the unique needs of special populations, the use of the concept of eth-class in conducting ethnic-sensitive practice, and a general discussion of eliminating a fear of stereotyping as a means to increasing sensitivity to members of special population groups. The chapter discusses the situations specific to those special population groups likely to be encountered in work with adults who bear memories of childhood sexual abuse. The eth-class concept provides a means of understanding this situation in practice. The ecosystem model is a means of managing this confusing array of a single client’s group memberships. The helping process is unique in rural settings, where nearly 25 percent of Americans reside. Persons of homosexual or bisexual orientation face huge social challenges.
