ABSTRACT

Educational aims figure prominently in most books and articles on curriculum. Aims provide general guidelines for teachers — they are not dreamy visions of a distant state. In summary, aims: are broadly phrased in statements; are long term; and generally apply to systems rather than individual schools. Many writers agree on common goals for schooling such as academic, vocational, social and personal, but they disagree on the emphasis to be given to each in a school curriculum. J. Goodlad argues for the following categories: Academic goals; Vocational goals; Social, civic and cultural goals; and Personal goals. Objectives greatly assist the planning process for teachers. The foundation for well planned teaching is unquestionably, clearly stated objectives. In terms of the teaching role, objectives provide the opportunity for teachers to formulate, and hopefully act upon, clear statements about what students are intended to learn through instruction.
