      ABSTRACT

      A 'record of achievement' (ROA) may include profiles of a variety of skills, attitudes, personal achievement and results in public examinations. In using ROAs and profiles schools have to make a number of decisions about the content, ownership and management of them. Portfolio assessment is more than simply a collection of student work in a folder. According to J. L. Herman, P. R. Aschbacher and I. Winters portfolio assessment is an operation when an assessment purpose is defined. Portfolios are extremely valuable in making the linkages between standards, outcomes, curriculum and instruction. It requires high quality work; students have to organize their time and efforts to achieve specific outcomes; and they have to reflect on and critique, previous and ongoing learning. To a large extent, the information collected in a portfolio is undertaken by each student but it can involve parent involvement, if this source is stipulated in the assessment criteria.
