ABSTRACT

Once upon a time, at the edge of a large forest there stood a tiny cottage almost hidden by the trees. In it a little girl lived with her mother. The little girl could often be seen, in her red hood and cape, flitting among the tall trees. Her grandmother had made the hood and cape for her. At least one reason for the comparative dearth of grandparenting models is that grandparenting as a separate stage in the life cycle is relatively new. In the not too distant past, many grandparents were still raising their youngest children when their first grandchildren arrived. Over the years, scholars have made numerous attempts to classify the different types of grandparents. There is no widespread agreement on the best way to make the division. Fun-seeking grandparents seem to put an emphasis on their grandchildren's social lives and relationships. They are most interested in their friendships.
