ABSTRACT

Amid all the debate that is going on today about the crisis in Social Security and health care, it is easy to forget what things were like before these programs existed. Almost without exception, the responsibility for aging family members fell to the younger family members. One of the most tangible ways in which one can express his/her feelings for their grandchildren is by giving them presents that convey their love, expand their horizons, ease their lives, and just simply bring them joy. It is a good idea, however, to keep track of one's gift-giving, especially if some of their grandchildren live close by and see him/her frequently and others are far away. Although clothes are wonderful gifts, they are also, in the author's experience, among the riskiest. Everytime a new technological innovation comes along, the doomsayers report that kids are spending too much time in front of the television, computer, or video game and have stopped reading.
