ABSTRACT

Switzerland is hurtled without pity into the eye of the storm raging over the re-examination of the most wrenching years of the century and the Holocaust. Whatever the case, one must remember that the aim of the campaign is not to harm Switzerland's long-term image, but to put pressure on the country and achieve a short-term goal aim which, no doubt about it, is fully achieved. The smear campaign at times is the height of virulence and crudeness. It was thus because of Switzerland's small size, and especially because of its international isolation that the Jewish organizations, drawing on the United States' dominant position, succeeded in their violent smear campaign against the country. But the United States still remains very critical of bank secrecy, considering that it favors tax evasion, which is not a penal offense in Switzerland. The chapter describes precisely to show that there is not only one but many reasons for the intensity of attacks on Switzerland.
