ABSTRACT

The name of Esna is one of the many place-names which have descended from the ancient Egyptian, and have not changed through the course of the centuries. To the Greeks the town was known as Latopolis, for the latus-fish (perca Nilotica) was the deity of the city; but the Egyptians never adopted the Greek name, and from the earliest times to the present day the town has been called Esna.
