ABSTRACT
Qertassi (also spelt Kertassi, Gertassi, and Jertassi) lies on the west bank of the Nile. The village evidently took its rise when the sandstone quarries in the cliffs began to be worked, this was probably in the early Ptolemaic period, as the stone for building the Great Temple at Philae was brought from here.
