ABSTRACT

Psychometric procedures have proved to be particularly amenable to computerisation. Information technology is having a revolutionary impact on psychometrics. The overlap between psychometrics and curriculum implementation is in many ways at its most explicit with computer-assisted learning (CAL), and this usefully illustrates both the limitations and strengths of the psychometric model. Psychometric computerised test administration differs from CAL in that the questions are intended to identify long-term characteristics of the respondent. Computerised administration of tests has been used for some time, with several advantages over paper and pencil testing. Individual test administration in particular is a time consuming yet fairly automatic process for many tests, so that computerisation offers potential savings in professional time. Today, neural network programs developed by artificial intelligence epitomise the problems of the computerised actuary.
