ABSTRACT

We saw in Chapters 1 and 2 that many people are attracted to teaching, and to particular ITT routes, by the prospect of working and enjoying meaningful relationships with other people. For example, 92 per cent of respondents to our survey said they were attracted to teaching by the idea of ‘working with children or young people’, and 57 per cent by ‘the collegiality/teamwork aspects of teaching’, while 34 per cent of respondents (and 43 per cent of those choosing to follow PGCE programmes) said that one of the factors influencing their choice of ITT route was the desire to ‘train alongside people in my peer group/in the same situation’ as themselves. In addition, 84 per cent of respondents said that before they began their ITT programmes they were ‘particularly looking forward’ to ‘being in classrooms and interacting with children’, and 45 per cent said they were ‘particularly looking forward’ to ‘becoming a part of the school community’.
