ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss the issues that cause some people to make the decision not to complete the ITT programmes they start. For those readers who may be encountering similar problems, we offer a number of strategies for dealing both with the specific problems you are experiencing and with the difficult decision about whether or not to withdraw. If you are experiencing problems on your ITT course and have begun to consider whether or not you can or should complete your course, the first thing we would say is that this is not an unusual experience — many student teachers feel like this on at least some occasions. The second point we would make to those in this situation is that there are a range of options available to you. These include:

rethinking the nature of your experience, which might lead you to conclude that the issues you are facing are not as problematic or serious as you first thought;

attempting to resolve any very real problems that you are experiencing;

deciding that the problems you are experiencing are beyond resolution.
