ABSTRACT

Klein, as I have said, opposed Anna Freud's method of fostering the child analysand's identification with the ego and superego of the analyst. Others were less averse to this method of psychoanalysis. They included Anna Freud's so-called ego psychology followers in the United States. Examples include Ralph Greenson in California who emphasized the importance of boys dis-identifying from their mothers and identifying instead with men and masculinity to develop a strong, male-based ego and identity. 1 The influential feminist psychoanalyst, Nancy Chodorow, in turn adopted Greenson's theory in developing her critique of existing sexual inequalities and differences. 2
