ABSTRACT

In this chapter, two-factor mixed and within-subjects designs and their interpretation will be discussed. Although you will be shown the basic calculations for analysing these designs, the emphasis will shift from detailed discussions of how and why Analysis of Variance is calculated, to which procedures should be chosen and how various ANOVA tables and graphs should be interpreted. You have been shown the three most mathematically straightforward designs in earlier chapters, and there is little new to learn from analysing more complicated designs by hand. The following have been illustrated so far:

Splitting total variability into between-group and within-group variability — one-factor between-subjects designs (z3 and 4).

Splitting within-group variability into between-subject variability and residual variability — one-factor within-subjects designs (Chapter 7).

Splitting between-group variability into main effect and inter-action variability — 2×2 between-subjects designs (Chapter 9).
