ABSTRACT

This chapter describes memory by using a metaphor as a model. It introduces number of concepts such as: taking in an impression, imprinting it into memory and expressing this memory. These concepts help us to better understand the consequences of dementia and to better understand the world, as Mrs. Jones in the example experiences it, as a result of her forgetfulness. The chapter deals with the consequences of the most obvious symptom forgetfulness. Information coming in through the senses ends up in the memory. The assertion about memory is: all factors that can negatively affect the process of taking in impressions, imprinting them into memory and expressing them in ordinary persons can also affect persons with dementia. In hospitals and nursing homes, also in residential homes, care staff have the inclination to want to make rooms extra pleasant and decorative for festive occasions. There are always a few patients or residents who cannot bear this.
