ABSTRACT

The spatial categories with which Temiars conceptualise their world are off-the-ground/ground and house/forest. They regulate the human body with upper/lower and inner/outer schemata. Temiar houses in this area are constructed from walls of woven, split bamboo tied on to a wooden frame and roofed with atap thatch. Flooring is also made from split bamboo, apart from the kitchen where it is usually constructed from slats in order to allow the debris to drop through to the ground beneath. Once the posts are in position, the work progresses quite quickly with the walls and flooring, and finally the atap roof is woven and tied firmly in place. The most popular games that young children play in the village are family games. They build small shelters with fires, heat water and bake small pieces of cassava. Children use small animals as babies in their games, carrying them in the folds of their sarongs.
