ABSTRACT

Different types of outcome measure can be used in a cost-effectiveness analysis depending on the objective of the evaluation. Three types of outcome measure appropriate for measuring the relative effectiveness of counselling interventions in the healthcare setting are considered in this chapter. These are: process indicators, intermediate outcomes and final outcomes. Classifications of well-being or quality of life outcomes are generated from survey work. The method of collecting outcome data depends on the type of study design chosen. If a randomised control trial or other controlled study design is used, then the evaluation will involve prospective data collection for one or more intervention groups and a control group, who represent the baseline or ‘do-nothing’ option. If there is limited time and funds to conduct an evaluation, a before/after intervention analysis is best.
