As the Yugoslav partisans established their control over larger and larger areas of German-occupied Serbia, Slovenia, the territory of the pro-German Croatian government, and – after the surrender of Italy in September 1943 – the Italian Zone of Occupation, they were able to use small air strips to attack German lines of communications, military units and supply dumps, and to receive support flown in from Allied air bases in southern Italy.
