ABSTRACT

After Fitzjames and Seyid Ali had departed with the passengers, mail and despatches from the crippled Euphrates, the remaining members of the expedition – Chesney, Estcourt, Cleaveland, Charlewood, Ainsworth and Rassam – made ready to take the steamer back to Basra. The first, most difficult task was to release the vessel from her cramped position in the shallow Lemlum channel and drop down to the open part of the river where she could be turned around.
