ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the various methods of grouping and also the uses of these groups in the organization of mathematics teaching and learning. A mathematics teacher should be aware that grouping by ability may use either the mathematical ability of pupils or their general ability. Vertical grouping occurs when all the pupils within an age range of two years or more are grouped together. Random ability grouping occurs when, without measurement of ability, pupils are assigned to convenient sized working groups. Banding occurs when all the pupils within an age range are assessed by reference to ability and are then grouped in bands. The senior mathematics teacher’s responsibility for selecting, obtaining and maintaining mathematics equipment is closely linked with his responsibilities for curriculum and finance. Even if few schools have mathematics laboratories, there are many schools which have special mathematics areas
