ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I introduce a framework for the study of culture and cognitive development. Like other constructivist treatments, the framework is guided by the assumption that individuals construct new understandings in their goal-directed activities; in turn, these novel understandings influence the emergence of subsequent goals. A central aim of the current work is to understand the intrinsic relations between individuals’ goals and social life that lead the individual to appropriate and specialize forms linked to their social participations.
