ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to gain an understanding of the way social interactions and practice-linked conventions are interwoven with the sellers’ mathematical goals during the Sell Phase of the practice. To this end, child sellers who varied in age and years of schooling were observed practicing their trade in the streets. Though the focus is on the Sell Phase, neighboring phases are documented as well, since these phases were in part linked to street activities: While they are in the streets, children sometimes share information on pricing merchandise (Prepare-to-Sell Phase) and on finding stores with the “best buys” (Prepare-to-Purchase Phase).
