ABSTRACT

Some work groups, because of the nature of their mission, space limitations, geography or other factors, are cut off from opportunities to interact with other groups in their organization. Task challenge is influenced by many possible factors. Task success or failure influence work group cohesion just as they influence individual self-confidence, job satisfaction, and desire to stay on the job. The chapter examines variables systematically and consider how they apply to the processes of group development, performance, maintenance and renewal. Most groups begin as collections; to become viable teams that will effectively pursue organizational goals, they must be as carefully tended as an Englishman’s rose garden. Time can have a similar effect on several other variables in the upper portion of the diagram as the group develops skill, and either learns to adapt or else finds ways to circumvent the obstacles, thus increasing their interaction opportunities.
