ABSTRACT

The think-aloud protocols were used for a more detailed analysis of the cognitive transformation processes. The verbal protocols provided further evidence for the subprocesses, which were postulated to occur in the material transformation tasks. In order to further investigate the different types of errors that may occur and also to obtain some appreciation for the individual differences that may exist among various learners, an additional experiment with a larger number of subjects was performed. The collected data were analyzed in several different ways. Unlike the simulation program, which executes the transformation processes reliably, subjects made several types of mistakes—errors in syntax as well as semantic errors. The chapter analyzes the relation between the general or abstract information that is typically presented by the sentences of a text and the more specific information that is typically presented by a case or example.
