ABSTRACT

Utilitarianism takes an intuitive way of acting for an individual—people should maximize their pleasure and minimize their pain—and applies it to society. The principle of choice for an individual is the principle of choice for a society. John Stuart Mill states in Utilitarianism that it is crucial to the idea of justice that “all persons are deemed to have a right to equality of treatment, except when some recognized social expediency requires the reverse”. The Mills argue that support for the liberation of women is founded on utilitarian arguments, which include arguments about justice and liberty. If women are treated equally with men, the human race will improve because the talent available to improve society will be doubled, and the happiness of society will greatly increase. A theory of gender justice examines the fairness, equality, equity and fulfilled needs of two groups of people; it compares men and women. Distribution is of great importance.
