ABSTRACT

Contemporary theories of justice focus on the distribution of benefits and burdens, or goods, in society. Developing one’s abilities involves becoming the type of person one chooses and doing with one’s life what one desires, and people should be given the right to do these things to some degree. This is an important concept of gender justice because women have been hindered in this fashion by gender socialization, cultural constraints, reproductive concerns, educational limitations and business practices. Recognition of women’s experience is very important because many of women’s concerns and needs have historically fallen on deaf ears. The framework of gender justice includes the principles of self-determination, which is composed of the criteria of self-development, recognition, equality and gendered consequences; and diversity. The framework moves toward a focus on women being empowered to live their lives in the manner they see fit without losing sight of the community, responsibilities people have toward one another, and the social-relations within those communities.
