ABSTRACT

In this final chapter, I review the study’s major observations and highlight some of the conclusions about the various forces shaping the emergence and the perpetuation of the urban black ghetto and its prospects for improvement. In the introduction, I stated that the focus of the study was to comprehend the dynamic micro-macro relations played out in the lives of urban ghetto residents and their struggle to maintain a neighborhood-community. By studying the urban neighborhood ghetto, we gain a better understanding of the sources of the problems facing the residents and the strategies they, using extant resources, adopt to deal with the problems. This approach is important because it is at the community level where we gain insights into the effects of economic trends and local and national policies on the lives of individuals and into the prospects of improving people’s lives.
