ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a summary of the study results as they relate to the supply and demand for nursing home care and discusses limitations of the study design and data sources used in the study. It presents policy implications of the results and provides future research ideas. In both the private pay and Medicaid populations, having greater income decreased the demand for nursing home care. In both the private pay and Medicaid populations, those receiving informal and formal community-based, long-term care showed a decreased demand for nursing home care. An increased knowledge of those factors associated with the supply of nursing home care in conjunction with a better understanding of the demand for nursing home care may enable policy makers to have desired effects on nursing home care utilization. A better understanding of factors which are associated with the demand for nursing home care has a variety of potentially important policy dimensions.
