ABSTRACT

Empowerment is an ecological theory which considers the person and the environment, including roles, relationships, resources, costs, and benefits. Researchers have generally defined empowerment as a process, not a state. This process includes a number of non-linear, epigenetic stages. At the most basic level, opportunity began with the freedom to participate as a contributing member of a team. The process of empowerment was enhanced by the networks of affiliation formed by caregivers. Opportunity extended to relationships with other community agencies. Caregivers were encouraged to enroll in community college classes, visit the public schools, and attend community events. Opportunity also included access to resources of the middle class. Throughout the process, caregivers worked to improve family relationships and to nurture a supportive network that included family, neighbors, and preschool personnel.
