ABSTRACT

It is 1:05 P.M. and recess is ending. In Mary Forrest’s bilingual second grade it will be time for English-language reading instruction when the class gets back to the room. 1 I am observing today in this classroom because Kara Mellon, a Chalet resident, is in the class. Mary has yard duty this recess so I bring her children into the classroom as Mary clears the yard of remaining stragglers and waits for all the classes to go in. As we walk to the classroom Kara orders me to “Get in the Girls’ Line.” I ignore her, and the class continues down the corridor. A child beside me looks up and says softly that Kara never finishes her work.
