ABSTRACT
The literature on democratization provides numerous contributing conditions. This chapter reviews the literature on democratization in order to make sense of the factors involved, so that we may better understand where major obstacles lie. It addresses some important questions, such as can leaders alone make democracy happen, does capitalism produce democracy, and is political culture a crucial variable. The next chapter discusses ways in which principal sub-processes of democratization or routes to democracy are impeded in the Chinese case.
