ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on basic assumptions and acquisition and on perpetuation and change. The parameters or conditions of human existence can be broken down into two main categories: those that are universal and those that are specific to given individuals. Death or biological extinction is the ultimate condition of existence and form of nonbeing. The conditions of individual existence include factors that are relevant to groups as well as those that only pertain to individuals. The capacity of humans to possess higher order values and their potential for aggression are not mutually exclusive. The quality as well as the possibility of survival is affected by humans’ possessing and striving after positive values. The way in which people assume personal responsibility for their lives is through the adequacy of their choices. Personal responsibility is based on the individual's having a repertoire of psychological skills. The word skill connotes proficiency, practised ability and expertness.
