ABSTRACT

The scene changes…to heavy North Midland ploughland. There is probably a grey sky overhead and puddles lie in the earth. A farmer is driving his tractor, spreading fertiliser…Some of the hedges are white with May blossom. It is the England which everyone expects; the world of the Times calendar. Suddenly the camera swings round to show the gaunt shape of the Jodrell Bank radio telescope; the huge, fantastic wire bowl swinging slowly round on its railway bogies. This is another Britain of the explorers and inventors….We watch the farmer at his work and take a look at the intricate mechanism of the radio telescope and the people who are operating it. A pen traces on a roll of paper a chart of the invisible radio stars. 1
