ABSTRACT

This introduction chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the part 4 of this book. The part argues that the knowledge and skills presented in the common core state standards for English language arts (CCSS-ELA) and the common core state standards for mathematics (CCSS-M) can be easily and effectively taught to children using developmentally appropriate practices. It explains about the prekinder garten, transitional/junior kindergarten, and each grade level from kindergarten to Grade 3. The part examines teachers working with students in these grades; however, much of the information might be interesting to parents as well. The CCSS are academic content standards: They state explicitly what students in a given grade level should know and be able to do by the end of the academic year. Classroom teachers must sit down with the CCSS for their grade level, and develop an intentional, effective, realistic plan for guiding their students to mastery of the specified content.
