ABSTRACT

Integrating content from more than one academic discipline within a single lesson is the hallmark practice of teaching the Common Core. To meet the expectations of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), teachers of young children will be expected to create "integrated-content" lessons. These lessons integrate content standards, student learning goals, and procedures drawn from more than one content area; provide instruction in both content areas; and assess students' mastery of the learning goals in each content area. The chapter presents integrated-content lessons in English Language Arts (ELA) and social studies for prekindergarten through Grade 3. In kindergarten, ELA lessons often provide students opportunities to practice their listening, speaking, and self-expression skills. The integrated-content lessons presented in this chapter were created from scratch. However, it is not necessary for teachers to re-build all their lessons from the ground up. The easiest strategy that can be used to create successful integrated-content lessons is "shoehorning".
