ABSTRACT

Attachment theory is a way of explaining the emotional bonds that children develop with their careers, how crucial these are to their personal, social and emotional (PSE) development and what one observes when a child is separated from the secure relationship of their primary career. Attachment research focuses on the importance of good enough early relationships, as one of the most important building blocks for good emotional well-being and mental health in later life. For many centuries, however, due to high rates of maternal and infant death, finding time to think about a child's developmental needs might have been a luxury. Perhaps parents were unable to imagine their children's futures, due to their mourning the deaths of previous babies as a result of incurable childhood illnesses. In September 2008 with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), there have been a number of curriculum changes, meaning staff, parents and children have had to get used to a great deal of change.
