ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on an important aspect of early years practice: the role of the key person. Elinor Goldschmied was very mindful of the importance of creating pauses across the day so that children could have time to gather themselves in and experience periods of calmness. As practitioners, building positive relationships with parents, it is not simply what one says that matters but how they relates to parents and how one say what they wish to communicate. Using technology can help to build and maintain positive relationships with parents-emails, photographs and texts can be a way of updating and reassuring parents about how sessions are going for the child during the early weeks. Always follow setting protocols and policies in this domain of communication. Asking parents and careers to be involved in the setting by valuing students' skills and talents offers further opportunities for building positive relationships together.
