ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses curriculum of Jean Berthiaume who were worked at a City High School in Tucson, Arizona. In his American History class, students made a film that was shown to the community. Townspeople gathered for the "World Premiere", the billing typical of both Jean's sense of celebration and the respect he gives student work. In this undertaking, students researched the time period of World War II to the present, interviewing local residents, and were tasked with presenting the local story within the context of the national narrative. The students were proud of the final product and said the biggest challenge was to make the film a cohesive whole; they had to figure out a lot of history and a lot of details. Jean invites students to ponder inclusion, diversity, and acceptance in their own lives and mixes in issues of global importance. In the nationally recognized "creating sustainable communities" curriculum, he asks students to consider their sphere of influence.
