The Scope of a Sophist

Philostratus began his treatment of sophists with a contrast between philosophers and his own profession:

… where philosophers said they had as yet no certain knowledge, the sophist used to speak as one who knew; at least he would preface his remarks with ‘I know’, or ‘I can see’, or ‘I have long been aware’, or ‘to men nothing is certain’. ¹
