Polyester lm was invented in England by the Imperial Chemical Company (I.C.I.) in the 1940s. John Rex Wineld, of Aurington, England, and James Tennant Dickerson, of East Lothian, Scotland, were listed on the application of September 24, 1945 (serial number 613,398), in Great Britain, and credited with the rst patent. Aer World War II, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company bought the patent rights to manufacture it.1 DuPont applied for its own patent under serial number 476,004, led February 13, 1943, which was later abandoned. On March 22, 1949, however, the U.S. Patent Oce did issue patent rights to DuPont for “polymeric linear terephthalic esters.” is patent (#2,465,319, which expired on July 29, 19612) was a continuation in part of the 1943 application by DuPont.
