ABSTRACT
As a member of the frame drum family, the tambourine has a long history that dates from the medieval period back to ancient Balkan and Middle Eastern civilizations. Generally associated with dance and minstrel music of Europe, it remained a folk instrument until its introduction into the orchestra in the mid-to late nineteenth century.
