ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores how these three factors contributed to the birth of United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), how it developed, how it responded to changing issues and how it achieved, at its best, visionary power and impact. United Nations Intellectual History Project (UNIHP) identified three elements that usually lay behind successful initiatives and operations within the UN: ideas, people, and institutions. The book focuses on key events and key personalities that demonstrate UNICEF's capacity to exercise global leadership for children and make a difference in many countries and at many times over the nearly seven decades of its existence. As the world becomes ever more integrated, questions of how to deal with the problems of globalization become ever more pressing, especially to find ways to offset its weaknesses and ensure better outcomes for people in all parts of the world.
