ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns a variety of potential ways of dealing with the problems arising from the core relationship of occupational stress. It is organized around the primary target. The treatments of organizational targets are specific to the stressors, while the treatments of the individual targets are usually specific to the strains. The use of the word treatment is not intended to limit the coverage to formal, carefully planned treatments, nor is it intended to limit the coverage to professional 'treaters'. One commonly used dichotomy is emotion-focused and problem-focused coping. Coping techniques are sometimes taught in treatment programs and they are ways of dealing with occupational stress. Latack study asked people how they behave when confronted with role conflict, role ambiguity, and role overload. The primary target is the immediate focus of an element of the organization or of the person. There are probably many quite different variations in the nature of Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
