ABSTRACT

The purpose in this chapter is to introduce some of the principal concepts of optimization methods as they apply to land-use and transportation analysis. It is not intended as a replacement for a thorough understanding of the area, but as a refresher or an introduction. The hope is that by emphasizing those concepts and techniques of greatest importance at the expense of others, equally interesting, but less directly relevant, enough can be conveyed to give the reader the necessary background from which to continue in this text as well as others.
