One explanation which has been applied widely in studies of memory development is the increased use of strategies with age (Flavell, 1970, 1977). Strategies are intentional, goal-directed, procedures; memory strategies are things we choose to do to help us remember. In this view, increases in memory performance with age, are due to children using memory strategies more efficiently as they get older. The two most studied strategies are rehearsal and organization. We shall consider each in turn.
