ABSTRACT

The overall aim of the research project to be described is to discover whether the same processes can be inferred to account for the free recall performance of subnormals as are hypothesised to account for that of normals. The specific population employed in the project consisted of adults attending adult day training centres. Previously, experimenter intervention in free recall by subnormals has largely been limited to the technique of blocked presentation. Therefore in general modes of assistance were employed in the present project which were aimed at encouraging hierarchical strategies. The project will be reported in a logical rather than a chronological order. The research will not be dealt with experiment by experiment so much as in terms of different aspects of secondary processes. In terms of analysis of results, the basic statistic employed was analysis of variance. When further analysis of differences between groups within a factor was required, tests of the Newman-Keuls type were employed.
