ABSTRACT
During my fieldwork in Kiribati, studying social responses to natural disasters related to water, I found myself suddenly very close to my object of study when one night in March 2011 the most powerful earthquake ever registered hit the coast of Japan, resulting in a tsunami warning across the whole Pacific region.
