Goal Seven of the Millennium Development Goals aims at halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015. Although Goal Seven of the Millennium Development Goals has already been met at the global scale, Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the regions whose population has the least access to an improved water supply. According to the World Health Organization's definition of sustainable water access, households in Sub-Saharan Africa may obtain increased usage if the distance to the water sources is reduced. When the villagers of Belgou had to choose where to collect water, the choices seemed to be more determined by the distance to the possible water source than by the varying water quality of the four different sources. During the rainy season, the domestic water sources are, by contrast, mainly used in the household for drinking, cooking, bathing, and domestic hygiene.
